Bassist Evan Lipson has operated as a musician since adolescence—intuitively seeking the liminal realms in which intellect and instinct, history and myth, and creative and destructive force intersect. Drawn towards aberrant perspectives at an early age, his formative experiences were primarily rooted in extreme and often discordant forms stemming from various traditions of “underground” and ancient musics. Massimo Ricci (Touching Extremes) writes, “Lipson easily stands among the best bassists I’ve heard lately, his terrifically strapping tone epitomizing the decision to really learn how an instrument works.”
Lipson most frequently tours with Roughhousing (with Zach Darrup and Jack Wright), Virtual Balboa (with Ben Bennett and Zach Darrup), Dumbass Youth (with Steve Gigante and Mike Baggetta), as well as a collaborative duo with dancer Luciana Arias. His list of collaborations reads like a phone book of the underground experimental scene, including: Susan Alcorn, Tim Barnes, Mary Halvorson, Col. Bruce Hampton, Shelley Hirsch, JACK Quartet, Byard Lancaster, Pauline Oliveros, RUINS (Yoshida Tatsuya), and Wharton Tiers.
