Joe Russo’s Selcouth Quartet
Featuring Stuart Bogie, Jonathan Goldberger & Jon Shaw
“Joe Russo is the human octopus of the jam community.” – Live for Live Music
Selcouth Quartet is a dynamic and eclectic ensemble that defies easy categorization, blending intricate compositions with soaring improvisation to create a sound all its own. The origins of the Selcouth Quartet were some mixture of long-gestating schemes and happy accidents. Drummer Joe Russo, tasked with putting together a group for a last-minute show one night in late 2022, called up three old associates: guitarist Jonathan Goldberger, saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist Stuart Bogie, and bassist Jon Shaw. Russo had played with them in various projects over the last several decades and dreamt of what could happen if he gathered them all together. A year later, their self-titled debut album is set for release in late 2023. Born of creative immersion in a remote and otherworldly environment, it seamlessly drifts between hauntingly beautiful melodies, propulsive improvisation, expansive atmospheres, and towering sonic constructs. With their debut, Selcouth Quartet has already stumbled onto something surprising and transfixing, but it’s also just the beginning.
