Kate Gentile: Find Letter X
Kate Gentile is a Brooklyn-based drummer/composer/improviser. In addition to leading her own bands and projects like Find Letter X, The Screaming Age, and Mannequins, she has worked extensively with Matt Mitchell: as the duo Gloatmeal, co-leading the band Snark Horse, and playing on Mitchell’s albums Phalanx Ambassadors, A Pouting Grimace, and Oblong Aplomb. She also co-leads the bands Sifters (with Jeremy Viner and Marc Ducret) and recently-formed band Personal Space (with Nathaniel Morgan and Andrew Smiley), and has worked with forward-thinking musicians such as Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas, Miles Okazaki, Anna Webber, and John Zorn. She has also worked with International Contemporary Ensemble performing and recording her album-length piece, biome i.i. Find Letter X features Jeremy Viner (tenor sax & clarinet), Matt Mitchell (piano), and Kim Cass (bass). The band will play re-imagined versions of music from each of the three discs of Gentile’s triple album, Find Letter X: Iridian Alphabet, Senselessness, and The Cosmic Brain. The music synthesizes new combinations of elements from multiple genres, including jazz, new music, and brutal death metal, through the lens of Gentile’s harmonic and rhythmic language.
