Big Ears is partnering with Knoxville’s Cattywampus Puppet Council for Krewe du Cattywampus, a parade pairing giant puppets made by young people in East Tennessee with musicians representing New Orleans’ second line and Haitian rara kanaval traditions. On Saturday, March 26, led by New Orleans’s iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band and joined by an assembly of musicians from New Orleans and Haiti, Knoxville’s streets will be filled with music, art, dancing, joy, and revelry.

Community members of all ages are invited to make giant puppets, masks, costumes and come together to parade. The parade will kick-off in the Old City at 1pm, run across the Gay Street Viaduct, and conclude with a street party from 2-4pm at the Southern Railway Station. The party will feature a mixture of music from Knoxville, New Orleans and Haiti, as well as kids’ activities, food trucks, and more. Both the parade and street party are free and open to the entire community.

STREET PARTY MAKERS, CRAFTS, AND ACTIVITIES
After the parade concludes at the Southern Railway Station, the real party begins! Southern Railway Station will play host to local vendors and makers who will feature activities for the whole family. Participants include:

HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN KREWE DU CATTYWAMPUS!
Sign up to be in the parade. The parade and street party are free and open to the entire community. Individuals, families, schools, neighborhood groups, and organizations are all encouraged to participate. You’re welcome to create your own big puppet, mask, costume, or form a parade crew and make something together. Cattywampus will also have extra art available to carry if you simply want to join in the parade itself.  All parade participants must register.

MAKE ART!
This year’s parade theme is Our Wildest Dreams: Beyond what we can imagine. Fantastical. Creating joy and delight. Our biggest hopes and aspirations. Making the impossible possible. For this year’s parade, we want to see your wildest dreams and visions: for yourself, your communities, and for the world. What is the impossible we can make possible? What can we dream into existence together?

COME TO OUR PARADE STUDIO DAYS!
We’ll be hosting maker space at St. James Episcopal Church (1101 N. Broadway) during the days leading up to Big Ears for community members to help us work on big puppets for the parade, as well as make their own art to carry. Below are the days & times for these. All are welcome!
-Sunday, March 20, 2p-6p
-Monday, March 21, 4p-7p
-Tuesday, March 22, 4p-7p
