Marisa Anderson & William Tyler

Marisa Anderson & William Tyler

William Tyler and Marisa Anderson are “natural collaborators,” Pitchfork said of the guitarists’ 2021 album, Lost Futures, “with quick, clean styles of fingerpicking that can sound equally complex and effortless.”

Born in Tennessee and based in California, Tyler got started as a young touring ringer with the indie Americana vanguard of Lambchop, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Silver Jews. He has since launched an admired career as a solo artist and a bandleader who has worked with Meg Duffy, Bill Frisell, Glenn Kotche, and the filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, effortlessly uniting cryptic folk and pastoral country into eloquent instrumental compositions.

Anderson was classically trained but cut her teeth in country and jazz bands in Northern California before wandering the country for a decade until she alighted in Portland, Oregon. Her work is an unfolding vision of American folk at the places where it blurs into modern classical, West African blues, and other enriching contrasts. Her solo and duo records include collaborations with Jim White of Dirty Three, Tashi Dorji, and Tara Jane O’Neil, while she has appeared on recordings by Circuit Des Yeux, Matmos, and Sharon Van Etten.

Tyler and Anderson first recognized their musical kinship when they both performed in a memorial show for the late Silver Jews leader David Berman. Working together remotely and in Portland through the chaotic days of 2020, they scored Lost Futures with their complementary etch-work, each revealing new shades in the other’s distinct voice as the music seems to pulsate with a gentle but insistent sense of beautiful decline.
