Matt Nelson’s Out Series
For years Matt Nelson has been the hinge pin of Knoxville’s experimental improv scene. His weekly Out Series at the Pilot Light, which brings together local improv stalwarts with outsider musicians from disparate corners of the creative woodwork, is a jewel of Knoxville’s musical underground.
For Big Ears 2023, Nelson has selected players from the series to present in three performances:
Series I (3/30/23 5-6pm) :
Existential Dread: Ryan Clackner (guitar) + Hunter Deacon (drums)
Jake Smith (guitar) + Jonathan Keeney (pedal steel) duo
Series II (3/30/23 6:30-7:30pm):
Will Yager (solo bass)
IO: Matt Nelson (bass) + Adam Lion (percussion) + Ben Cohen (sax)
Series III (3/30/23 11pm-12am) :
OMFU + The Scrapers: Steve Gigante (guitar + vocal) + Matt Nelson (bass) + Jake Smith (guitar) + Hunter Deacon (drums)
