Yo Soy la Tradición

Sun   Mar   27   2022 - 2:33 PM

Miguel Zenón, a prolific New York-based alto saxophonist originally from San Juan, has released fourteen dazzling albums as a bandleader. In them, the Grammy nominee and MacArthur Fellow’s unique jazz-classical lens roves decisively over wide distances, pausing to focus on Puerto Rican Jíbaro and Plena music, the songs of salsa icon Ismael Rivera, Julio Cortázar’s postmodern novel Hopscotch, and much more. Zenón remaps the music of the Americas and Europe into a vast, formidable conceptual terrain all his own.

While burnishing this résumé, Zenón has toured and recorded with many of jazz’s leading thinkers and iconoclasts, from Fred Hersch and Danilo Pérez to Guillermo Klein’s Los Guachos and The SFJAZZ Collective. In 2016, Zenón joined Chicago’s Spektral Quartet at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival to premiere Yo Soy la Tradición, the composer’s most personal and summatory meditation on his home country’s folklore.

The eight-movement suite displays Zenón’s superb sense of balance between saxophone and strings and his erudite yet dashingly musical cultural investigations. All About Jazz called the 2018 album version, which was nominated for a Best Latin Jazz Album Grammy the next year, “a work of superb beauty—sometimes emotional and urgent, other times solemn and reverent.” At Big Ears, Zenón and the Spektral perform Yo Soy la Tradición, in addition, the quartet will world premiere a new piece written from them by Zenón.
