BIG EARS

Preservation Hall Brass & East Tennessee Bluegrass Association

Preservation Hall Brass & East Tennessee Bluegrass Association

Thu   Mar   24   2022 - 7:00 PM Jig and Reel

The Preservation Brass, the resident brass band out of New Orlean’s legendary Preservation Hall, makes a special collaboration with a trio of East Tennessee’s finest bluegrass musicians: fiddler Evie Andrus, banjoist Zach Mongan, and bass player Rusty Holloway. This project, an exclusive for Big Ears, explores the connection between New Orleans jazz and bluegrass—two distinctly American genres, both of which rely heavily on improvisation and primarily use acoustic instruments.

This collaboration comes nearly a decade after Preservation Hall’s previous bluegrass collaboration, the acclaimed American Legacies project which featured the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Del McCoury Band. In this jazz and bluegrass iiteration, Pres Brass will spend a week in Knoxville rehearsing with ETNBA, creating a songbook and finding the places where the genres intersect and then we’ll set them loose on the festival, where they’ll play on WDVX’s Blue Plate Special, the Big Ears opening reception and then late into the night on Thursday at Boyd’s Jig & Reel.
