Slauson Malone 1

“An experimental movement is afoot in New York’s underground hip-hop-jazz circles…[he] is one of its principal proponents.” – The New Yorker

Based in Los Angeles, Slauson Malone 1 is the musical project and performance piece of artist Jasper Marsalis, exploring the possible intersections of popular music and performance art. Marsalas hails from a long lineage of jazz performers (his grandfather, Ellis; his father, Wynton). While he separates his musical project from his family’s name and his artmaking practice, both endeavors are informed by his interest in “black spectacle and the way that blackness is consumed by people.” Past record releases of his include A Quiet Farwell, 2016–2018 (Crater Speak) in 2019 and Vergangenheitsbewältigung (Crater Speak) in 2020. His latest offering, EXCELSIOR, will be released in late 2023. Slauson Malone 1 is accompanied by cellist, Nicky Wetherell.
