We Were Here Before
We Were Here Before is an expression of memories, reflections, and meditations on the experience of being people of color in the USA. Their music is part of a collective consciousness; a thread that weaves throughout deeply rooted feelings about the now and what has been.
The Washington DC trio, Mark Cisneros (tenor sax), Luke Stewart (bass), and Nik Francis (drums), formed in the fall of 2020, and soon recorded an eponymous album dedicated to the memory of saxophonist, Aaron Martin, Jr. Released by Catalytic Sound in 2021, the trio’s sound was described as “a flat-out immersive experience”, by The Free Jazz Collective, and “a timely anchor for beauty-seekers in an age of disintegrating community and unmoored destiny”, by Capital Bop. We Were Here Before has since performed throughout the DC area, including the recent Catalytic Sound Festival of improvised music.
