Hooray! Nils Frahm, the first headliner we announced for Big Ears 2019, will release a new EP in January. The second follow-up to his great All Melody, Encores 2 was recorded through an amplified stone well he found on the island of Mallorca. It focuses on the dazzling electronic elements of his work, as epitomized by the 13-minute finale “Spells.” With glistening arpeggios and vocals that stretch across them like wispy clouds, it’s a gorgeous piece that lingers just at the edge of propulsion and stasis.
