LISTEN: Alvin Lucier’s So You… (Hermes, Orpheus, Eurydice)

Alvin Lucier will turn 88 just after Big Ears 2019. But that’s just a number, right? He’s released two albums in the last month—and those came after a massive box set and the remarkable Criss-Cross in 2018. The first is So You … (Hermes, Orpheus, Eurydice), an hour-long sprawl of slowly pulsating beats produced by frequencies that move around one another in very tiny intervals. Played by Charles Curtis and Anthony Burr and laced by the voice of the great Jessika Kenney, it is hypnotic and immersive. It’s built on a telling of the myth of Orpheus from the perspective of his beloved Eurydice. Download it now, and we’ll tell you more about Lucier’s other new record later this week.
