A guide to 12 game-changing jazz inspirations of Kamasi Washington
Big Ears alum Kamasi Washington played a big gig in the Twin Cities this week, which gave City Pages critic Dylan Hicks a chance to offer an ingenious jazz tutorial of sorts—a guide to 12 game-changing jazz inspirations of Washington who also have something to offer Washington fans who don’t know much else about the great American music. The list touches on two Coltranes, Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, Ambrose Akinmusire, and even Muhal Richard Abrams, a jazz liberator and occasional member of The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Hicks’ mission with this list is obviously one that is near and dear to our hearts at Big Ears, so give it a read and the artists a listen if something is unfamiliar.
