How cool is it to see jazz at a point in 2018 where it not only demands best-of lists in Stereogum and Rolling Stone but that those lists are vital and different and exciting, reflective of the incredible work being done within and around the genre right now? We love it. Big Ears 2018 performer Makaya McCraven tops the Stereogum list (and ranks highly with Rolling Stone), while Craig Taborn, Wadada Leo Smith, and Bill Frisell all land new projects on the Rolling Stone list.
