Alam Khan with Anubrata Chatterjee

Alam Khan. Two-time Grammy-nominated artist Alam Khan, son of the late legendary maestro of the sarod, Ali Akbar Khan and heir of the Seni Maihar Gharana (style of learning and playing), has been captivating audiences worldwide for over 20 years. Beginning his music training at the age of seven, Alam was fortunate to learn in the traditional style of Guru and Shishya (teacher and student) under the careful guidance of his father, who himself pioneered the sarod to new heights. The influence of his teachings is evident in every note Alam plays, as well as in his imaginative interpretations of ancient ragas passed down from the courts of Emperor Akbar through Mian Tansen in the 16th century. Alam has established himself as the true heir to Ali Akbar Khan’s incredible musical legacy and received direct praise from late musical icons such as Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan and Buddhadev Dasgupta. He has performed and toured around the world alongside India’s greatest tabla masters of our time, including Swapan Chaudhuri, Zakir Hussain, and Anindo Chatterjee and has collaborated with a diverse array of artists across various genres, including the Grammy-winning Tedeschi Trucks Band, Vijay Iyer, Blake Mills, Anoushka Shankar, Kronos Quartet, Karsh Kale, Beats Antique, Bob Weir, The San Francisco Symphony, Del Sol Quartet, and Jack Perla, among others. He is a founding member of the genre-bending group Grand Tapestry and composer of The Resonance Between. He is currently the Head of Indian Classical Instrumental Studies at the Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM) in San Rafael, California, a hub for students and lovers of Indian classical music worldwide since his father established the school in 1967. Alam is dedicated to preserving, performing, and sharing the rich tradition of Indian classical music with the world, while helping it flourish in the modern age.

Anubrata Chatterjee is an Indian tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana (music schooling style) of Hindustani classical music tradition. He is the son and student of legendary tabla player Anindo Chatterjee. He made his concert debut alongside Indian flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia and has since collaborated with many other musicians in the Indian classical music realm, such as Amjad Ali Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shahid Parvez, and T. H. Vinayakram. Chatterjee has performed as a soloist and accompanist in many other music collaborations in various genres and with percussion projects and has participated in numerous tabla duet tours with his father. Internationally, he made his solo debut on BBC World Radio in the UK in 1991 as a teenager and performed at many prestigious venues and festivals globally. Anubrata has also been a part of a unique collaboration with jazz legend Wynton Marsalis at the Lincoln Center Jazz in New York and is currently a member of the touring Ravi Shankar Ensemble.
