Darius Jones Trio

Legend of e'Boi (The Hypervigilant Eye)

Sat   Mar   28   2026 - 10:15 PM The Blackbox

Darius Jones is an alto saxophonist as ferocious as he is tender, as prone to wailing rampages of sound as he is to delicate laments. “For a long time, I looked at my saxophone as a weapon like a Samurai and his sword,” he once told Fifteen Questions. “Lately the relationship has evolved into an animal and its human companion.” His playing holds space for both of those roles, especially on his revealing planned nine-album series, Man’ish Boy, his years-long contemplation of mental health struggles in Black men and the work it takes to overcome trauma. With the seventh chapter, 2024’s absorbing Legend of e’Boi (The Hypervigilant Eye), he howled through an interpretation of “No More My Lord,” squeezing and bending and pulling the melody of that old prison song until it broke in his hands. But “We Inside Now” was about seeking solace, about trying to find a quiet place to sit with your blues.

Jones is a steadfast collaborator, working with the likes of Marc Ribot and Matana Roberts, recording multiple albums with the great Matthew Shipp, and launching the Otherlands Trio alongside bassist Stephan Crump last year. But as heard on Legend, he has also created a long-running and deep-listening trio with drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Chris Lightcap. These are Jones’ struggles and stories, but they seem to share in the load, providing a platform to sound them out. Ahead of the final two chapters of Man’ish Boy, Jones brings that trio to Big Ears 2026.
