Dinner Party (Robert Glasper/Terrace Martin/Kamasi Washington/9th Wonder)

The keyboardist Robert Glasper wanted to call his new jazz-and-hip-hop supergroup Dinner Party because, as he saw it, everyone was invited. These were the early days of the pandemic, with everyone isolated at home; Dinner Party had been born from a collective sense of camaraderie, with the producer and saxophonist Terrace Martin asking beat-making kingpin 9th Wonder to send over some loops that he, Glasper, and saxophonist Kamasi Washington might build into songs. On their eponymous debut EP—released in July 2020, as Black Lives Matter protests roiled the world—they had included “Freeze Tag,” a sweet-sounding neo-soul number about police brutality. These songs were short, vibes-based pieces with few solos: invitations to sit around a table or a backyard barbecue and talk about the day, whenever the chance finally presented itself again.

Dinner Party has maintained its everyone-invited credo. At Jimmy Iovine’s urging, they remixed their debut alongside several rappers (including Snoop Dogg, who narrated) and earned a Grammy nod. Several guest vocalists joined 2023’s Enigmatic Society, all supporting Phoelix, the versatile Chicago singer who had led several songs on their introduction. And Whatchu Bringing?, Dinner Party’s 2026 return, begins with a spoken-word poem about a potluck, about how it’s nice to bring something to eat but really best if you show up with some love at least. The group’s easygoing core remains, with 9th Wonder’s soul-sample loops anchoring selfless sax exchanges between Washington and Martin and Glasper’s effortless keyboard swings between G Funk and Mwandishi Band psychedelia. They get to nine songs in 25 minutes, the moods shifting from the lounge ambiance of “Mutual Respect” to the boom-bap strut of “Stargazing.” Whatever you’re feeling, Dinner Party wants you to bring it—everyone’s invited, after all.
