If Jeff Tweedy never wrote another song, he would end his career as one of the most prolific and insightful songwriters (and distinct singers) in the history of rock ’n’ roll. When Tweedy was just out of his teens, after all, he helped define the sound of an entire subgenre, underpinning a love of songcraft with a punk gusto in Uncle Tupelo; many of Uncle Tupelo’s alt-country successors have yet to outstrip that energy, those tunes. And then came Wilco, which quickly outgrew its roots to reimagine what it meant to make a rock record. Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost is Born: This nonpareil run of albums added elements from half a century of American music to songs that presented unflinching portraits of despair, undercut with a sense of mirth that always felt like the smile behind Tweedy’s sigh. In the last quarter-century, Wilco has cemented its status as one of indie rock’s most venerable institutions, a dependably great band.

But as Tweedy sings near the start of Twilight Override, his stunning three-disc masterclass from 2025, “No one stands a chance getting caught up in the past.” Indeed, amid all Wilco’s touring and recording, Tweedy has emerged as a multi-faceted dynamo, from producing records by the likes of Richard Thompson and Mavis Staples to writing multiple books that chronicle the songs he loves and how he approaches writing them himself. And in only a decade, he has released five solo albums. Recorded with his sons Spencer and Sammy and a cast of Chicago musicians raised on Wilco (Sima Cunningham, Liam Kazar, Macie Stewart), Twilight Override is another career pinnacle, its mix of sentimental, sad, wry, and cautiously happy songs showcasing not only the reach of his writing but the breadth of this band. That band of family and friends joins Tweedy at Big Ears 2027, along, to be sure, with other pals floating around Knoxville.
