Joanna Sternberg
“The qualities every songwriter should strive for are honesty and specificity — Joanna Sternberg has both.” – Stereogum
Joanna Sternberg, a burgeoning folk singer-songwriter, grew up in Manhattan Plaza, the artist-subsidized apartment building established in the 1970s and mostly populated by performers, musicians, and creatives. Sternberg’s early start was with piano, but they quickly took to guitar and bass as a teen. Scholarships led them to Mannes College of Music for classical music studies and later to the New School for jazz studies where they continued to hone their craft. Much of Sternberg’s early post-college years was spent gigging around Brooklyn bars accompanying other artists on bass, but they started writing and performing their own songs shortly after. Their debut album, Then I Try Some More, received positive reviews for its difficult themes. Sternberg followed up with I’ve Got Me in 2023. Now signed to Fat Possum Records, their latest album sees a continuation of the themes that catapulted them into the folk lexicon.
