Matt Mitchell & Anna Webber
“Kindred spirits in every sense of the word, Webber and Mitchell are restless intellects whose multi-hued music continually pushes the outside of the envelope.” – All About Jazz
Matt Mitchell is a pianist and composer interested in the intersections of various strains of acoustic, electric, composed, and improvised new music. He currently composes for and leads several ensembles featuring many of the current foremost musicians and improvisers, including: Tim Berne, Kim Cass, Kate Gentile, Ben Gerstein, Ava Mendoza, Ches Smith, Chris Speed, Tyshawn Sorey, Chris Tordini, and Anna Webber among other. As a leader/co-leader, he’s released over a dozen albums, and as a sideman he’s been a part of over thirty albums. Mitchell joined Anna Webber for her most recent album, Idiom (2021), a follow-up to her critically acclaimed release Clockwise. The flutist, saxophonist, and composer’s interests and work live in the aesthetic overlap between avant-garde jazz and new classical music. She was recently named a 2021 Berlin Prize Fellow and was voted the top “Rising Star” flutist in the 2020 Downbeat Critic’s Poll.
