Peter Stampfel and the Atomic Meta-Pagans

The Atomic Meta-Pagans, originally the Ether Frolic Mob, formed in the aughties. It is an 8 person, all-volunteer band, with everyone being members of several other bands. All told, in fact, band members play with dozens of other bands. The AM-Ps record exclusively on the Don Giovanni label. Stampfel is also a member of the Wildernauts (Elt Smith, Walker Shepard, and me) who record for the Jalopy label, and the Jeffery Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band (two year’s best top 10 albums chosen by Robert Christgau). The AM-Ps play paleo hillbilly swamp rock, informed by the great American songbook. Stampfel’s Peter Stampfel’s 20th Century in 100 Songs, along with 40K word liner notes (he won a Grammy for liner notes for the 90’s reissue of the Harry Smith Anthology, along with several other fellow liner note writers), is available at no cost at peterstampfel.com. Because of logistics, the AM-Ps usually perform with less than our 8 members. 3/8th of the band, Dok Gregory, Steve Espanola, and Stampfel, will perform at Big Ears. As musician/performers, our main goal is to have and share ecstatic joy. We’re pretty good at this.
