Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant avec Folie à Quatre

“Getting it right instead of getting it sooner paid off handsomely for Trevor Dunn and his Trio-Convulsant.” – Something Else!

Trevor Dunn was born behind the Redwood Curtain in The Emerald Triangle, traversing a fine line between hippies and rednecks. He began to focus on the electric bass at age thirteen, and four years later co-founded the avant-rock band Mr. Bungle. He’s since worked in an array of styles, including his own avant-garde jazz/rock ensemble, Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant. The trio, with Dunn (bass), Mary Halvorson (guitar), and Ches Smith (drummer-percussionist), released their album Sister Phantom Owl Fish in 2004. Nearly two decades later, they returned with Séances (2022). For this album, the trio was joined by Folie à Quatre, a string and winds quartet composed of Carla Kihlstedt (violin/viola), Oscar Noriega (bass clarinet), Mariel Roberts (cello), and Anna Webber (flute). The new album further evolves Dunn’s vision to embrace the myriad styles and forms that he has explored over the years, melding bludgeoning metal with intricate contemporary chamber music, and boundary-blurring jazz with mutated country blues. Dunn brings his Trio-Convulsant avec Folie à Quatre to Big Ears.
