Gabriel Kahane Talks About His Train Ride Across the United States

Gabriel Kahane’s Book of Travelers, which he will present at Big Ears 2019, is the document of his train trip across the United States the day after Donald Trump was elected president. It is a deeply empathetic and poignant album, less about finding answers than understanding the questions. We love the way he explains his process and motivation in this interview with San Francisco Classical Voice. “A lot of what I do is about trying to enter into stories and experiences that are initially very distant from my own experience,” he says. “I feel like if I can find the emotional nubbin of catharsis in some story, and translate that into something relatable, maybe I can offer people a way of feeling more deeply and of being moved.”
