Listen: Nief-Norf Play Stirring Rendition of Evan Ziporyn’s “Aneh Tapi Nyata”

Knoxville’s Nief-Norf—who will perform multiple times at Big Ears 2019, including a concert of Harold Budd’s pieces—is more than an ensemble for playing new music. As an organization, they have also built one of the country’s premier summer music festivals, where students and scholars, professionals and hopefuls work closely on new collaborations and stirring performances. During the 2018 festival, 17 such attendees joined for this stirring rendition of Evan Ziporyn’s “Aneh Tapi Nyata,” a hypnotic but propulsive piece of bejeweled rhythm that combines traditional gamelan instruments with rock ’n’ roll staples. Give it a listen.
