“Makaya McCraven: The Brain Behind The Mind-Bending Beats”

Here’s a fitting honor for someone who made one of the best and most audacious jazz albums of the century so far: Drummer, beatmaker, editor, and producer Makaya McCraven recently got his own episode of NPR’s Jazz Night in America. During the interview, he discusses his process, his ideals, and how he thinks he fits into the jazz lineage. “I don’t think what I’m doing is necessarily that far off of the legacy of jazz that I grew up in,” he says. “I think one of the things that gives it strength is that people want to argue over it. That’s a good sign. That means there’s life here.”
