Roscoe Mitchell Reminsces on the Early Days of The Art Ensemble of Chicago
In a new piece for Artforum, Roscoe Mitchell reminisces about his early days in Chicago and The Art Ensemble alongside Joseph Jarman, who he met in 1961. “This was an exhilarating time because it created an enriching learning environment where we could hear other members’ compositional ideas while developing our own. Joseph’s music followed a fascinating, unfamiliar trajectory,” Roscoe writes. Jarman died in January. Mitchell returns to Big Ears in March to lead a 50th-anniversary performance for The Art Ensemble of Chicago.
