On New Year’s Day, BBC aired a wonderful segment about the rise of a new jazz scene in London, featuring saxophonist Nubya Garcia and Sons of Kemet tuba player Theon Cross. They talk passionately about the musical and ethnic mix that has made the sounds so surprising and vital. “The mix of genres and the mix of styles that we’re seeing can only happen in London, because the particular sets of immigrants,” Cross says.
