Watch: Mercury Rev’s “Goddess on a Hiway”

In the late ’90s, Mercury Rev made two music videos for “Goddess on a Hiway,” the magnetic debut single from their breakthrough LP, Deserter’s Song. The second, directed by Anton Corbijn, is the gem—as relevant today as two decades ago. In the clip, a man attempts to cross what appears to be the United States’ northern border, only to be thwarted by local law enforcement. When he does make it over, his car clad in polished Statue of Liberty miniatures, he has to deal with harassment and mockery before he’s able to go on his way. A timely clip, no doubt. Watch it now, and possibly hear “Goddess on a Hiway” at Big Ears 2019.
