Red Bull Music Academy Interview With David Torn

This wide-ranging Red Bull Music Academy interview with producer, guitarist, composer, and soundtrack master David Torn is incredibly inspiring. Torn talks candidly about the way music became his refuge as a troubled teenager, about the troubles with cyclical tastes, and about being comfortable with not playing what everyone else is playing. He also talks about the challenges of making music and simply existing after an operation for a brain tumor cost him his hearing in his right ear. “If I had an ethos, it would be that the person making music is actually reflecting back feelings and things that are somewhat incapable of being explained via words,” he says. Torn plays solo at Big Ears 2019 and with the new trio Sun of Goldfinger, featuring drummer Ches Smith and old pal Tim Berne.
