Ches Smith: A Force of Nature

At Big Ears 2019, Ches Smith—one of the most exciting drummers working in the modern free jazz orbit—will join Tim Berne and David Torn in Sun of Goldfinger. But you may have seen Smith in lots of other bands, from various Marc Ribot and Mary Halvorson projects to Trevor Dunn’s groups and even Mr. Bungle itself. He talks about his ability to harness various genres and idioms in this JazzTimes piece, which deservedly labels him “a force of nature.” Best of all, though, may be this Berne plaudit: “If everyone was as committed to music and creativity as Ches Smith, there would be no need for television.”
