The Other One

The Other One (2023) is a dazzling cinematic document of Henry Threadgill’s inimitable experimental vision. At the center of the film is a multimedia performance Threadgill presented in May 2022 at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, New York, combining a vibrant new composition for a 12-piece chamber ensemble with an array of elements including recited poetic texts, prerecorded vocals, and projections of paintings, photographs, and film footage. The New York Times described the music as possessing “a galvanic sense of swing” in a performance imbued with “an obliquely danceable, straightforwardly joyous Threadgillian energy.” In The Other One, Threadgill captures and remixes the performance into an oblique reflection on the resonant ironies of contemporary urban life.
