Julian Lage Trio
at St. John’s Cathedral
On December 10, Big Ears welcomes guitarist Julian Lage — along with his trio featuring bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King — to St. John’s Cathedral in Knoxville celebrating, Squint, his debut Blue Note Records release.
Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians” (The New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association, and a spirit of infinite possibility. The California-born New York-based musician boasts a prolific resume on his own accord in addition to collaborating with Gary Burton and John Zorn, as well as duo projects with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge, and Fred Hersch, among others. As Lage set out to record his debut for Blue Note Records, the virtuoso guitarist reflected on the label’s storied history and the way his own music connected with it. The result is Squint, a striking new album that weds incisive, expressive songwriting with the profound interplay Lage has honed over the past few years with his deft trio featuring bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King.
Julian Lage Guitar Masterclass
Julian Lage is pleased to offer an exclusive masterclass prior to his concert at St. John’s. All masterclass tickets include admission for one to the evening’s concert. Where available, master class tickets will include early admission to the show. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer ‘masterclass-only tickets’ at this time. Start time for the class is generally an hour before doors but the exact start time will be communicated with ticket buyers one week prior to the show. During each class, 30 minutes will be spent teaching to a unique piece of curriculum before a 10-15 minute Q&A session. Tickets to these classes are limited to ensure all participants come away with a unique and hands-on experience. Participants are not required to bring instruments, and topics are not necessarily tied to instruction and technique. In addition to the class, participants will leave with a Julian Lage Essentials Kit from D’Addario (electric strings and pick) along with a master class-specific piece of curriculum to take home.
