LISTEN: Caroline Shaw’s “The Orangery”

In late January, New Amsterdam Records—one of the most vital new music syndicates in the country, responsible for releases from Roomful of Teeth, Battle Trance, Mary Halvorson, Ted Hearne, and so many more—announced a promising partnership. They’ve linked with the legendary Nonesuch Records to expand their distribution and publicity reach. The first record to emerge from that partnership is by Pulitzer-Prize winning composer and North Carolina native Caroline Shaw, a member of Roomful of Teeth. In April, Nonesuch and New Amsterdam release Orange, Shaw’s string quartet written for the Attaca Quartet. Hear a surging excerpt, “The Orangery,” now, and see Shaw with Roomful of Teeth in March.
