Emmett Kelly has a brash, unapologetic new rock band. At Big Ears 2019, Kelly will perform with experimental cornetist Rob Mazurek in their fascinating project Alien Flower Sutra. But just last week, he released The C.I.A., the self-titled debut of his new quartet with Denée and Ty Segall and relentless drummer R.E. Carlos. It’s a brief but intense listen, dead-ahead rhythms caked in the squall of electric bass and Denée’s invective loaded with audible barbs. Give it a spin.
