Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings was one of the most acclaimed albums of 2018, jazz or otherwise. But did you hear its immediate predecessor and conceptual corollary, Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape)? During his stint in London to record improvisations for Universal Beings, he participated in a few transoceanic jams and eventually turned edits into a massive mixtape that is arguably more immediate and visceral than Universal Beings.
