Listen: Nils Frahm’s Encores 2
If you’ve ever listened to Nils Frahm’s audacious piano-and-electronics compositions or seen him perform surrounded by a massive bank of keyboards and sequencers, you know he’s not one for easy ideas. For his 2018 LP All Melody, Frahm intended to release a triple album, with each disc inhabiting its own world of mechanics and moods. But All Melody seemed too big to fit all those ideas, so Frahm has followed it up with two wonderful EPs, Encores 1 and Encores 2. The second—recorded through a stone well he found on the Spanish island of Mallorca—is the more introspective, electronic, and immersive, and it’s out now via Erased Tapes. Give the beauty a listen, and ease into the workweek.
