Master Jazz Musician Henry Grimes

It is our distinct pleasure to welcome jazz legend and Juilliard-trained bassist Henry Grimes to the festival for a performance of his remarkable avant jazz at the Bijou Theatre on Saturday night. The master musician has played more than 600 concerts in 31 countries since 2003, when he made his astonishing return to the music world after a 35-year hiatus. At the age of 70, Henry made his professional debut on a second instrument, the violin, at Lincoln Center with Cecil Taylor, and at 71, he became a published author with his debut book of poems, Signs Along the Road. Audiences will have the opportunity to hear in person what Grimes can do with his instrument as he leads an all-star quartet of stellar bandmates: creative flutist, composer, bandleader and educator Nicole Mitchell; Chicago based cellist, composer and educator Tomeka Reid; and American jazz drummer and percussionist Warren Smith.
