Matthew Shipp is a seminal American avant-garde jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, celebrated as a complete stylistic innovator. He has forged a unique and instantly recognizable musical language that synthesizes free jazz with elements of contemporary classical, hip-hop, and electronica. His career is defined by fierce intellectual independence and a disciplined, prolific dedication to expanding the boundaries of his art. In seamlessly bridging the avant-garde with 21st-century sonic landscapes he has expanded the expressive possibilities of jazz itself.

Shipp’s career launched after moving to New York City in 1984. A defining period was his membership in the acclaimed David S. Ware Quartet, hailed as one of jazz’s premier bands. Simultaneously, he began building his own landmark & far-ranging discography as a leader. In the 2000s, he became a central figure for Thirsty Ear Recordings’ “Blue Series,” incorporating electronics and hip-hop.

Matthew Shipp’s solo piano work – which will be presented at Big Ears this year – presents his singular lexicon in mesmeric fashion. Recent years have seen prolific output for labels like ESP-Disk’ and TAO Forms, including celebrated trio albums and solo masterpieces.

Shipp has maintained deep collaborations with musicians like bassist William Parker and saxophonist Ivo Perelman, and he has also emerged as a significant writer. His collection of essays, Black Mystery School Pianists and Other Writings, was a 2026 American Book Award Winner.
