Nate Chinen Remembers Joseph Jarman
Last week, we posted a news item about the death of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s cofounder, Joseph Jarman. In The New York Times, Nate Chinen offers a more thorough overview of Jarman’s rich life and artistic impact, both within the Art Ensemble and apart from it. “Jarman brought a more vivid theatricality to his role, typically appearing in African face paint and ceremonial vestments,” Chinen writes. “He shared that tribal motif, meant to represent shamanism in non-Western cultures, with the band’s bassist, Malachi Favors, and its drummer, Famadou Don Moye.”
