“Navigating the Many Styles of Yves Tumor”
In early September, enigmatic producer, singer, and Knoxville native Yves Tumor dropped Safe in the Hands of Love, one of the year’s best and most surprising albums. Though Tumor has earned accolades for his surrealistic production, which often feels like a dirty city street lit by lurid neon, Safe is a glorious if eccentric pop album, with big hooks and emotional openness. Listening back, though, you can hear those layers at work in his earlier work, especially on his remix of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Zure.” To understand that evolution, spend some time with this great Stereogum primer.
