“Ravi Coltrane Discusses Rediscovered John Coltrane Album”

John Coltrane died a month before his son, Ravi, turned two. Ravi has not only become a world-class modern saxophonist but also an essential analyst of and advocate for his father’s work. This year, he helped compile Both Directions at Once, unreleased and once-lost sessions from his father’s Classic Quartet. In this interview, he talks about that band’s “perfect synergy,” which would soon lead to A Love Supreme. Ravi finds his own synergy with the son of another musician on those tapes, bassist Matt Garrison, in a trio with his dad’s occasional drummer, Jack DeJohnette. Together, they play Big Ears 2019.
