Suhail Yusef Khan with Anubrata Chatterjee

Suhail Yusuf Khan is an Indian classical sarangi player and vocalist. He is the grandson of legendary sarangi maestro Ustad Sabri Khan (1927-2015), who along with his uncle Kamal Sabri, first taught him the difficult instrument which has been played for many generations in the family. The sarangi is a traditional, ancient, short-necked bowed string instrument from South Asia (primarily India and Nepal) known for producing a sound remarkably similar to the human voice. Suhail has performed internationally as a soloist and is very in demand as accompaniment for some of the biggest names of South Asian classic music and contemporary music. From Kaushiki Chakraborty, Talvin Singh and was recently featured on the Grammy nominated album Hard Rain with Kronos Quartet, Asha Bhosle, Willie Nelson and many others. Khan has released three full length collaborative folk albums with James Yorkston and Jon Thorne under the name Yorkston/Thorne/Khan for Domino Records. Khan is also a member of Welsh-Indian folk fusion group Khamira. Suhail received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University and is a former professor of music at Yale and at University of Hartford’s Hartt School of music, dance, and theatre.

Anubrata Chatterjee is an Indian tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana (music schooling style) of Hindustani classical music tradition. He is the son and student of legendary tabla player Anindo Chatterjee. He made his concert debut alongside Indian flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia and has since collaborated with many other musicians in the Indian classical music realm, such as Amjad Ali Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shahid Parvez, and T. H. Vinayakram. Chatterjee has performed as a soloist and accompanist in many other music collaborations in various genres and with percussion projects and has participated in numerous tabla duet tours with his father. Internationally, he made his solo debut on BBC World Radio in the UK in 1991 as a teenager and performed at many prestigious venues and festivals globally. Anubrata has also been a part of a unique collaboration with jazz legend Wynton Marsalis at the Lincoln Center Jazz in New York and is currently a member of the touring Ravi Shankar Ensemble.
