WATCH: Inside Morton Subotnick and Joan La Barbara Apartment

Joan La Barbara and Morton Subotnick are legendary composers and performers, innovators who respectively transformed the way we think of the voice and electronics in music. Their apartment in New York’s Greenwich Village, as you can see in this amazing little segment, is a treasure trove of their work and that of their friends. The first Buchla synthesizer sits on a shelf, hidden among some papers; La Barbara sings in a pantry. Take a tour of the space that the two share, thanks to WQXR’s Q2 Spaces. La Barbara performs her own work and that of Alvin Lucier at Big Ears 2019.
