Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Mathias Eick may look or sound familiar, even if you haven’t heard his stunning sessions for ECM where he leads conversational quartets through his own intimate pieces. He was a long-standing member of Big Ears veterans Jaga Jazzist, and he’s played on a spree of Scandinavian metal and rock records. Get to know his solo work, though, starting with this year’s Ravensburg. A spirited exploration of his family and everyday scenes of domestic curiosity, it’s a delightful record of memorable melodies and bright harmonies, where each player is more invested in the story than the solo.
