For the Evenings Out There: A Big Ears Playlist

With Big Ears only six weeks or so away, we thought we might share some playlists we’ve created for friends curious to learn more about the outstanding artists playing the festival.

This one was created for a dinner party a few weeks back, focusing on the singer-songwriters like Waxahatchee; Julien Baker’s new collaboration with TORRES; a track from Beth Gibbons’ haunting first solo record; the mysterious Jessica Pratt; classics from Taj Mahal, Rufus Wainwright, and Marisa Nadler and evocative new work from Arooj Aftab, Cassandra Jenkins, Dawn Richard, Tucker Zimmerman, Mabe Fratti, Tindersticks, ANOHNI, and so many others.

You will also find terrific performances from Ireland’s Lankum, Ukraine’s DakhaBrakha, Spain’s Tarta Relena, Scotland’s Brìghde Chaimbeul; plus Bill Frisell…well, you get the idea.

A feast of musical delights await you.

New Albums Arriving Before Big Ears

Just two weeks before he arrives at Big Ears, March 14, Nels Cline will release Consentrik Quartet, the eponymous debut of the guitarist’s band comprising saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Tom Rainey via Blue Note Records. Consentrik Quartet will be celebrating the album release with a performance at Big Ears on March 30.

Acclaimed sitar player, producer and composer Anouska Shankar now shares the third and final installment of a series of mini-albums. She began with Chapter I: Forever, For Now in October 2023, and followed with the Grammy-nominated Chapter II: How Dark it Is Before Dawn in April 2024. Chapter III: We Return To Light will be released by LEITER on March 14.

Macie Stewart, one half of rock duo Finom, is releasing a solo album, When the Distance is Blue, on March 21 via International Anthem. Described as “a love letter to the moments we spend in-between,” the album features fellow Big Ears artist Lia Kohl.

Eiko Ishibashi has been busy scoring Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s films Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist. Despite this, she returns to her singer-songwriter roots with her upcoming album Antigone, releasing in March on Drag City Records. It’s her first proper record since 2018.
