BIG EARS FESTIVAL

Ambrose Akinmusire: Honey from a Winter Stone

“An uncommonly gifted, unquestionably unique trumpeter-composer.” – Downbeat

Trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire is charting a new, expansive course through the musical cosmos. Building upon the innovative spirit of his 2018 masterpiece Origami Harvest, Akinmusire now unveils Honey From A Winter Stone. This audacious work fuses the ethereal textures of a string quartet with the inventive prowess of rapper/producer Kokayi, and the inventive harmonies of longtime collaborators Sam Harris on piano and Justin Brown on drums, merging hip-hop, chamber jazz, and avant-garde music. Recently appointed Artistic Director of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance, Akinmusire’s boundary-defying artistry earned him the 2023 Trumpeter of the Year accolade from Downbeat Magazine, solidifying his place as a pioneering force in contemporary jazz.
